If you’re a fan of BBQs you may want to monitor how long you leave your meat to cook. The black char on meat can contain molecules that irritate skin and cause inflammation. Processed meats are also known to trigger skin inflammation, and the fat in red meats suffocates healthy cells, affecting your skin’s ability to protect itself. For a bigger impact, why not give veggies a go and swap up your diet?

A sugar-heavy diet will prevent your skin from staying firm and youthful. When you eat too much sugar for your cells to process, the excess sugar combines with proteins which then damage your skin’s collagen. To still satisfy a sweet tooth try setting a limit for your sweet allowance or drop how many sugars you put in your tea. Drink plenty of water afterwards to prevent rotting teeth.

Citrusy foods

In the same way that sugary foods and drinks have an impact on your skin and teeth, citrusy things can wear away your teeth’s protective coating of enamel. Citrus foods have high acid levels which can lead to dry skin and stained teeth. In moderation though eating citrus fruits has been associated with a lower risk of skin cancer.

Quick Tips On How To Make Your Eyes Brighter Naturally

With medicinal eyecreams, eyedrops and treatments it can be easy to forget more natural remedies. If you are working to a tight budget or want to take a more natural approach try out these ideas to make your eyes sparkle.

Boost your berries

Not only do they taste good and are healthy, berries are great for curing puffy and tired looking eyes. The antioxidants and vitamins in berries will boost your immune system and make your eyes appear brighter and healthy. As well as eating your strawberries, raspberries and blueberries, strawberries in particular can be placed under your eyes for extra health benefits.

Relax with a little cup of tea

Chilled green tea or black tea works wonders on your eyes. Soak your teabags and leave the water to cool before squeezing out any excess liquid and placing one teabag over each closed eyelid. The caffeine content in the tea will stimulate your body and decrease inflammation. This will help your circulation and make for tighter skin and more awake looking eyes.

A nice cucumber sandwich

Cold cucumber slices love your body. Cut a cucumber into thin slices and apply directly over closed eyelids. The high percentage of water in cucumber will help hydrate your eyes and the natural acids will soothe skin irritations and swelling. Raw and cold potato slices also work in a similar way.

Sleep tight, sweet dreams

One of the oldest tricks in the book, getting a good night’s sleep is essential for you and your eyes. Tiredness and a lack of sleep can result in irritated and dry eyes. Stick to a good sleeping routine which works for you. It might also help to sleep with an extra pillow: elevating your head a bit more will ease […]

Tips for looking after your body and skin as you age

Staying confident and feeling beautiful as you age is vital to your self esteem. With a number of ways you can maintain your body and skin it is all about knowing what works best for you. Don’t give up on a healthy lifestyle or let your beauty regimes slip at the sight of your first grey hair! Embrace your inner youth with these tips.

The Hair

Whether you plan to embrace your grey hair or cover it there are things you still need to do to look after your hair. Using a nourishing conditioner will prevent your hair from becoming dull or lifeless. Also avoid tying your hair back too tightly as this can cause damage to the hairs making them brittle, and often results in hair loss.

Keep having regular appointments at the hairdressers to avoid any lasting damage from split ends or to cover up your roots. If you are dying your hair do something that is right for you and makes you feel comfortable. Just don’t forget that grey is also a statement look, should you choose to keep it!

The Mouth

The ultimate attention-getter and a key focal point of your face. Keep your lips full and hydrated by regularly applying a lipbalm. Chapped and cracked lips are easily solved so there are no excuses! If you love to wear lipstick then there’s no need to give this up! Just try out what colours work best for you and your skin tone. A lot of older women live by subtlety or muted tones such as plums or browns, but opting for something bright is not off the cards either.

Worried about sun damage? Reverse the effects with a skin peel

Most of us love soaking up the summer sun. We feel happier and the vitamin B we get from sunlight is fantastic for our general health too. However the sun also causes damage to our skin. You probably can’t even see the damage that has happened as most it isn’t visible to the naked eye. Sunburn and freckles are the external signs of sun damage but they only tell a fraction of the story.
Skin Peels
One popular treatment for sun damaged skin in to use a chemical peel or skin peel. We offer several different formulas but the one we recommend for sun damage and hyperpigmentation is Skin Tech Easy Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peel.

Easy TCA peels are a powerful formula that must be administered by a nurse or doctor, not a beautician. However, when applied in the proper setting by a professional it is one of the safest peels and most effective peels.

An Easy TCA peel requires multiple applications over a period of about a month. If you choose this treatment you’ll need to visit once a week to have the peel applied. Following the application and removal of the peel your skin will begin to flake and peel, causing some irritation and revealing some redness. Although these results may look a little unpleasant your skin won’t experience any actual ‘downtime’, meaning you can go about your normal routine if you wish. There’s no need to stay away from sunlight. Each peel will target the uneven skin discolouration, lightening it and reducing the sun spots that have built up at the surface and deeper dermal layers.

Once treatment is complete your skin will look fresher, feel firmer and your sun spots will be greatly reduced.

How to look better in a bikini this year

As your summer holiday approaches the thought of baring all in a bikini might be filling you with dread. If you’ve not managed to shift that winter weight yet then don’t panic! Read on to find out what you need to do in order to feel confident and happy in your bikini this summer…

It’s never too late to exercise: Even if your holiday is only a month away you can still achieve noticeable results if you start exercising now. Combine cardio exercise such as walking, running, and swimming, with strength and toning exercises like yoga and pilates. There are tutorials on YouTube to help you out. Aim to do at least 30 minutes of exercise four to five times per week if you want to see good results.
Start eating better: If you want to look amazing in your bikini then it comes from the inside. The saying “you are what you eat” really is true; what you put into your body has a bearing on how you look on the outside. Aim to up your intake of healthy, lean proteins like fish and chicken, and choose wholegrain foods like brown rice, making sure to also include plenty of fruit and vegetables in your diet to ensure you get a good variety of vitamins and minerals.
Dry body brushing: If you’ve got a holiday coming up and want to look great in your bikini then start dry body brushing before you shower. Sweep the brush across your skin, in the direction of your heart. It helps to boost circulation and gets rid of dead skin cells, leaving your skin glowing. Get beach-ready with these beauty treatments

If your summer holiday is fast approaching and you haven’t stuck to that diet and exercise programme like you promised yourself you would, then fear not, you can still have the beach body you want! There are a variety of different beauty treatments that can get you looking and feeling your best pre-holiday…

1)      Hair removal: The last thing you want to do on holiday is spend hours in the hotel bathroom each day de-fuzzing your legs and bikini area. At Swann Beauty we offer Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) hair removal as a permanent solution to unwanted body hair. An intense pulse of light damages the hair follicles without causing any damage to the surrounding cells. If permanent hair removal isn’t for you then opt for waxing to remove the hairs from the root, giving you a couple of weeks before it grows back.

2)      Mesotherapy: This non-surgical treatment, offered here at Swann Beauty, is great for rejuvenating tired, sagging skin, and for lessening the appearance of cellulite before your holiday. A solution of vitamins and minerals are injected into the skin, dissolving fat and allowing it to pass out of the body, leaving you with smoother, healthier skin, and a slimmer appearance.

3)      Pedicure: On holiday you’ll be living in flip flops and sandals so it’s important to get your feet looking in tip-top shape before you bare them. You can help things at home by treating your feet to regular foot baths with Epsom salts, followed by a thick layer of moisturiser, then sleep in socks to lock the moisture in. Have a professional pedicure to make sure your toenails are neat and tidy, and ready to go on show.

4)      Tanning: There’s nothing worse than […]

Megawhite: the new way to whiten your teeth

Megawhite is the latest treatment to take the beauty world by storm. Celebrities including the stars of Hollyoaks, The Only Way is Essex, and Britain’s Next Top Model have all used and endorsed Megawhite because it whitens teeth with fantastic results.

What is Megawhite?

Many tooth whitening treatments use hydrogen peroxide to remove stains, but some studies have shown that this chemical may be carcinogenic and could weaken the teeth. Megawhite is different. It uses sodium bicarbonate to gently, yet thoroughly, lift stains out of the deep pores in your teeth.

How does Megawhite work?

The sodium bicarbonate solution is applied to the teeth via a gum shield which is inserted into the mouth. A laser is then directed at the gum shield where it activates the whitening formula, causing it to release oxygen and pressure. The oxygen and cleaning agents alter the colour of the teeth from brown/yellow to white without affecting the structure of the tooth’s enamel.

What happens after the treatment?

The treatment process shouldn’t last any longer than around 20 minutes so it’s the kind of treatment you can squeeze into your lunch hour! Everyone is different, but most people can expect to achieve average results of around 9 shades lighter, depending on the severity of the staining before treatment.

After treatment the pores on your teeth will remain open for around 30 minutes so it’s best to avoid eating until after that time, and try to stick to light coloured foods and drinks for the first 24 hours after treatment.

Most clients tend to have around three or four Megawhite treatments per year, usually before special occasions. The results are fairly long lasting, depending on your regular eating and drinking habits. If you enjoy red wine and […]

5 ways to fight wrinkles

Although ageing is unfortunately unavoidable, it is possible to delay the inevitable and have younger, plumper, healthier looking skin for longer by living a healthy lifestyle and looking after your skin.

Here are five ways that you can fight wrinkles to keep your skin looking youthful and radiant for longer.

Start using anti-ageing creams early

Anti-ageing products will thicken your skin and reduce wrinkles, for firmer and smoother skin.  Rather than waiting until you’ve already got wrinkles before lathering on the anti-wrinkle cream you should start early.

Wash and exfoliate

Looking after your skin by regularly washing and exfoliating will help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.  Dry and neglected skin will only make any existing wrinkles appear far more noticeable.

Don’t smoke

Smoking can drastically age your skin as it takes away the oxygen and nutrients that keep your skin looking young and fresh.   People who smoke are far more likely to suffer from premature skin ageing than those who don’t smoke.

Wear sunglasses and sun protection

Sun exposure and UV radiation are another major cause of premature skin ageing.  If you’re going to be out in the sun make sure you apply a high factor sunscreen at least 30 minutes before.  The skin around your eyes is particularly thin and sensitive so make you keep it protected behind a pair of sunglasses.

Eat a balanced diet

If you want healthy, glowing, smooth skin then it’s important that you eat a balanced diet and drink enough water.  Healthy foods that are full of nutrients like vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fatty acids will help your body to fight the ageing process and keep your skin looking younger for longer.

5 beauty regimes to avoid before your wedding

We’re all for self improvement and we know how many brides are striving to look good on their wedding day but today we’re here to offer a word of warning. Try all the beauty tricks you like in the months leading up to your wedding but never try something new 1 week before the big day!

This is our definitive list of beauty no-nos to stay away from 7 days before your wedding:
1.       Skin peels
Skin peels are fantastic, we love them. They can clear up acne, scars, skin pigmentation and the effects of sun damage among other benefits but we always recommend you plan a skin peel in advance and at least 7 days before a big event.

We offer a number of different skin peel methods, one of which is Easy TCA peels. Easy TCA peels can eliminate fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, acne scarring and hyper pigmentation. Treatment is easy and safe but your skin will feel irritated. You’ll experience peeling, flaking skin for 3 to 4 days after each treatment. This is normal but of course won’t look good in pictures. As dead skin falls away the fresh layers beneath will appear quite pink, again, not a good look in photos.

Make sure your leave enough time between your skin peel and your wedding for the treatment to complete and your skin to return to a normal appearance.
2.       New make-up
Have you booked a make-up artist for your wedding day? Make sure you do a test run with the make-up he or she will be using on the day. Even if you don’t think you have sensitive skin there may be one product that feels uncomfortable or brings you out in a rash. The […]
